2018年1月31日（星期三）晚上7时48分至11时11分，所有马来西亚人都有机会目睹月球进入地球阴影造成月全食的现象。
肉眼能看到的月食将从晚上7:48开始，到11:11结束。月全食则从晚上8:51开始，直到晚上9:29食甚，到晚上10.07结束。月全食也被称为「血月」，由于日全食时，月球的颜色变成了红褐色。
那天晚上，月球也被称为「蓝月」（Bluemoon）。这不是因为月球变成了蓝色，而是在同一个月内（2018年1月）发生第二次满月。同月的第二次满月就被称为「蓝月」，但月球的颜色并没有改变。
这晚的月亮也被称为「超级月亮」，因为月球离地球最近，月亮看起来比平时大14%，亮度也增加了30%。
这三种现象的结合被称为「超级蓝血月」。上一次「超级蓝血月」发生在大约152年前的1866年。

2018年的一月我们就先迎接两个满月。第一个满月是在2018年1月2日，第二个满月在2018年1月31日。事实上，2018年1月的两个满月和2017年12月3日的满月都是超级月亮。超级月亮是当月球在满月时刚好又运行到最接近地球的一点上（近地点）而看起来比平时的大。如果超级月亮还不够特别的话，2018年1月31还将会出现月全食！
月全食是发生在月球进入地球阴影最黑暗的部分（本影）的天文現象。当超级月亮在2018年1月31日升起时已经是半影月食。所以月亮会显得稍微暗淡。随着月亮的不断升高，在吉隆坡晚上七时四十八分时会与地球的本影首次接触。月亮会逐渐进入本影，直到晚上八时五十一分时完全被本影遮蔽而变成血红。它将在十时七分开始离开本影。晚上十一时十一分将会完全退出本影。
最后一次在同一个月出现两个满月又逢月全食发生于1866年，而下一次将发生在2028年。为了与大家分享这罕见的天文现象，寻星天文学会将于2018年1月31日（星期三）晚上七时至十时举行月全食观测会。观测会的地点是在甲洞乌鲁天发法灵神庙前（3.22640°N, 101.63625°E）和国家天文馆（3.1395°N, 101.6896°E）。入场免费。
We kick off 2018 with two full Moons (also known as Blue Moon) in the month of January. The first full Moon was on 2nd January 2018 while the second one will be on 31st January 2018. In fact, both full Moons in January 2018 and the full Moon on 3rd December 2017 are super Moons. Super Moon appears larger than average because the Moon is at its nearest point to Earth (perigee). If this is not special enough, there will be a total lunar eclipse during the super Moon on 31st January 2018!
Total lunar eclipse happens when the Moon enters the darkest part of Earth’s shadow (umbra). When the super Moon rises on 31st January 2018, it will appear to be subtly dimmer because of penumbra eclipse. As the Moon continues to rise, it will make first contact with Earth’s umbra at 7:48 pm in Kuala Lumpur. The Moon will gradually move into the umbra until it is completely inside the shadow at 8:51 pm to appear as blood red. It will start to leave the umbra at 10:07 pm. It will be out from the umbra at 11:11 pm.
The last two full Moons in a month with total lunar eclipse happened in 1866 while the next one will be in 2028. In conjunction with this rare astronomical event, Star-finder will have total lunar eclipse observation session in front of the Tian Fatt Wei Ling Temple at Kepong Ulu (3.22640°N, 101.63625°E) and Planetarium Negara (3.1395°N, 101.6896°E) between 7:00pm and 10:00pm on 31st January 2018 (Wednesday). Admission is free.
